Guide to Getting Authorized for Radiation Work at UCLA

To use radioactive materials or radiation producing machines at UCLA, you must be authorized by the UCLA Radiation Safety Committee/ Radiation Safety Division. In accordance with Federal/State regulations and guides for radiation use.

To learn how to become authorized for radiation work choose your status from the following list

New Principle Investigator (Authorized User) seeking radioactive material authorization.

Radiation Worker who will be using radioactive material
New Principle Investigator (AUthorized User) seeking radiation machine authorization.
Worker who will be using radiation producing machines, e.g. X-rays.
Peripheral worker.

UCLA classifies personnel according to the following:

Authorized User/RAM: the person responsible for a radioactive material authorization and all use/workers under the authorization.

Authorized User/Machines: the person responsible for a radiation producing machine and all use/workers under the authorization.
Radiation worker/RAM: a person who uses radioactive material under the auspices of an Authorized User.
Radiation worker/Machines: a person who uses a radiation producing machine under the auspices of an Authorized User.
Peripheral worker: a person who does not use radioactive material or a radiation producing machine, but may frequent an area where these things are used.

Authorized User/RAM (AU)

To apply for an authorization to use radioactive material, do the following.

Contact the Radiation Safety Division at 310-205-6995. Indicate you want an application packet to become an authorized user for radioactive material (RAM) use. Indicate if the RAM will be used in humans or animals. The RSD will provide the application information by mail or email. The application form can also be downloaded from Authorization Documents. Select the appropriate documents for your uses.

Complete the application form and a Training & Experience form. Supplemental forms are necessary for radioactive material use in humans or animals. Experimental protocols must accompany the application.
Questions about the application may be directed to RadiationSafety@facnet.ucla.edu or by calling 5-6995.
Obtain the signature of your Department Chairman on the application form.
Mail the forms to: Radiation Safety Division, Strathmore Bldg., mail code 957061. If mailing from off campus, please use our off-campus mailing address found in Contacts.
Sign up for the New Worker Radiation Quiz (NWRQ) by calling 5-6995. Make sure your workers also sign up for the class.
If you will have Peripheral Workers in your lab(s), you must provide and document awareness training to them. The RSD can assist you in setting up an awareness training program.

The RSD will assign the application to a health physicist (HP). The HP will contact you to inspect your facility(s) and to clarify any issues. The HP will process the paperwork and forward the application to the Radiation Safety Officer and Radiation Safety Committee. The RSD places the highest priority on getting you approved quickly. However, the application process and gaining approval can take up to six weeks (although typically less than a month). Please plan for this amount of time.

Authorized User/Machines (AU)

To apply for an authorization to use a radiation-producing machine, do the following.

Contact the Radiation Safety Division at 310-825-7147 or 310-794-1742. Indicate you want an authorization application to become an authorized user for either human use or non-human use radiation-producing machines. The application form can be provided to you via email or can be downloaded from the Authorization Documents. Select the appropriate documents for your uses.

Complete the authorization application form and attach a copy of your safe operating procedures and any permits or certifications that may be applicable. Submit via email to RadiationSafety@facnet.ucla.edu, or fax it to 5-7076 ATTN: X-ray Machine Manager or Mail the forms to: X-ray Program Manager, Radiation Safety Division, Strathmore Bldg., mail code 957061. If mailing from off campus, please use our off-campus mailing address found in Contacts.
Questions about the application may be directed to RadiationSafety@facnet.ucla.edu or by calling 5-7147 or 4-1742.
To schedule Radiation Safety Training for either human use or non-human use X-ray equipment call 5-7147 or 4-1742.

Radiation Worker/RAM

You must be associated with an authorization (Authorized User). You may not use radioactive materials until you successfully pass the New Worker Radiation Quiz (NWRQ).

Obtain your Authorized User's authorization number, e.g. LA998. Ask your Authorized User if you will need dosimetry (radiation badge).

Sign up for the New Worker Radiation Quiz (NWRQ) by calling (79)4-5328. Indicate the authorization number you are associated with, and if you will need dosimetry.
Upon successful completion of the training, you may work with radioactive materials under the direction of the Authorized User.

Radiation Worker/Machines

Prior to operating X-ray equipment, you must obtain the appropriate training for the type of equipment you are using. Training is provided by either Radiation Safety Staff or other approved programs.

For radiation safety training pertaining to non-human use equipment, please call 5-7147 or 4-1742. For radiation safety training pertaining to human use equipment, please call 5-7147 or 4-1742 and Radiation Safety Staff will direct you to the appropriate person . Indicate the authorization number you are associated with, the type of X-ray equipment you will be working with and if you will need dosimetry.

Upon successful completion of the training, you may work with the radiation-producing equipment under the direction of the Authorized User.

Peripheral Worker

If you are sure you will not be using/handling radioactive materials or a radiation producing machine, then your only requirements are to be sure that you receive awareness training from your Authorized User (or designee) and that you notify the Radiation Safety Division that you are a Peripheral Worker.

Schedule awareness training with your Authorized User. Be sure to maintain documentation of the training.

Obtain your Authorized User's authorization number, e.g. LA998 or MA998.
Call 5-6995 or email RadiationSafety@facnet.ucla.edu and provide: your full name, social security number, date of birth, gender, and the authorization number you work under.

If your job duties change later on and you will handle radioactive materials or use a radiation producing machine, then you become classified as a radiation worker and must receive radiation worker training.
