To
use radioactive materials or radiation producing
machines at UCLA, you must be authorized
by the UCLA Radiation Safety Committee/
Radiation Safety Division. In accordance
with Federal/State regulations and guides
for radiation use.
|
To learn
how to become authorized for radiation work
choose your status from the following list
UCLA classifies personnel according to
the following:
|
Authorized
User/RAM (AU)
To apply for an authorization to use radioactive
material, do the following.
The RSD will assign the application to
a health physicist (HP). The HP will contact
you to inspect your facility(s) and to clarify
any issues. The HP will process the paperwork
and forward the application to the Radiation
Safety Officer and Radiation Safety Committee.
The RSD places the highest priority on getting
you approved quickly. However, the application
process and gaining approval can take up
to six weeks (although typically less than
a month). Please plan for this amount of
time.
|
Authorized
User/Machines (AU)
To apply for an authorization to use a
radiation-producing machine, do the following.
|
Radiation
Worker/RAM
You must be associated with an authorization
(Authorized User). You may not use radioactive
materials until you successfully pass the
New Worker Radiation Quiz (NWRQ).
|
Radiation
Worker/Machines
Prior to operating X-ray equipment, you
must obtain the appropriate training for
the type of equipment you are using. Training
is provided by either Radiation Safety Staff
or other approved programs.
 |
For radiation safety training pertaining
to non-human use equipment, please
call 5-7147 or 4-1742. For radiation
safety training pertaining to human
use equipment, please call 5-7147
or 4-1742 and Radiation Safety Staff
will direct you to the appropriate
person . Indicate the authorization
number you are associated with, the
type of X-ray equipment you will be
working with and if you will need
dosimetry.
|
 |
Upon successful completion of the
training, you may work with the radiation-producing
equipment under the direction of the
Authorized User. |
|
Peripheral
Worker
If you are sure you will not be using/handling
radioactive materials or a radiation producing
machine, then your only requirements are
to be sure that you receive awareness training
from your Authorized User (or designee)
and that you notify the Radiation Safety
Division that you are a Peripheral Worker.
If your job duties change later on and
you will handle radioactive materials or
use a radiation producing machine, then
you become classified as a radiation worker
and must receive radiation worker training.
