About Us

UCLA is one of the three University of California campuses that includes a research medical center under its radioactive materials license. This makes UCLA one of the largest and most diverse Broad Scope, Type A, licensee in California.

While this license allows the greatest flexibility in operation of a radiation safety program it also imposes the responsibility to ensure that the control, use, and disposal of radioactive materials is performed safely so that the research and clinical uses have a negligible effect to the campus and to the public.

Responsibilities
The responsibility of ensuring the safe operation of a radiation safety program is through the policy and procedures of radiation safety committees. At UCLA, the Radiation Safety Committee and Medical Radiation Safety Committee are responsible for the use of radioactive materials and radiation-producing machines for non-human and human uses respectively. The committee members, who are professors from different schools and departments, represent a cross-section of the campus that utilize ionizing radiation. The committee members are appointed annually by the Vice Chancellor, Research Program, with the assistance of the Radiation Safety Division.

The UCLA Radiation Safety Division (RSD) ensures that the University is in compliance with the policies and procedures of the two committees, the California Code of Regulations, Title 17, and conditions of the UCLA radioactive materials license, #1335-19.

Programs

The Radiation Safety Division manages various programs to demonstrate to the California Department of Health Services that the University can control and monitor the receipt, use, and disposal of any source of radiation. The following programs demonstrate the control and monitoring of use of ionizing radiation:

Authorization

Training
Isotope Receipts/Inventory
External Radiation Monitoring
Internal Radiation Monitoring
Medical
Audit/Decommissioning
Calibration
Radioactive Waste
Effluent Monitoring
Database Management
