Dr. Scott Hsieh is the Research Safety Division Quality Assurance Manager at UCLA. His belief in the merits of a strong laboratory safety culture developed as a safety representative working in the lab of Dr. Sabeeha Merchant at UCLA, from where he would earn his PhD. in Biochemistry in 2011. His interest in laboratory safety led him to a career at the UCLA Office of Environment, Health and Safety where he started as a Lab Safety Specialist. Over the next two years Dr. Hsieh rose within the organization to eventually become the manager for the Laboratory Safety Division in 2013. In this role, he has served as a founding member of UCLA’s Chemical and Physical Safety Committee, implemented UCLA’s Safety Forward positive incentive program, designed and developed the Safety Theory workshop series, and more. As the QA Manager, Dr. Hsieh continues to strive for improvement of the Research Safety Division and seeks to nurture the positive safety culture in labs at UCLA.
