The goal of the Environmental Health Program (EHP) is to make sure that students, faculty, staff and visitors are safe and healthy while on campus. The program primarily provides independent verification of the housing, food and water safety systems in place here at UCLA.
Through the EHP, UCLA permits and inspects all of its permanent and temporary food facilities on a regular basis to ensure that they maintain the highest standards of safe food handling and cleanliness. Inspection reports are available for public review at each of our food facilities. The EHP also performs food safety training for food facility employees, and reviews plans prior to the construction of new facilities or the remodel of existing facilities.
While the drinking water on campus is provided by the Los Angeles Department of Water & Power (LADWP), the EHP can and does respond directly to concerns about water quality from the campus community. The EHP also oversees the disinfection of new or newly repaired potable water lines in order to ensure that harmful bacteria are not introduced to the water after it arrives on campus. Whether through inspection, research or independent water analysis, we are working to ensure the safety of all drinking water provided on campus.
Since failure to properly maintain aquatic facilities can lead to injuries or the spread of waterborne diseases, the EHP also regularly inspects the University’s swimming pools and spas. The water quality, recirculation equipment and safety features of each pool are evaluated during every inspection. We also follow-up on any needed corrections so that each visit to one of our pools is a safe visit.
If you have questions or concerns regarding any of these areas, please contact the Environmental Health Program Manager.
