Hazard Assessment Tool for Shops (HATS)

Hazard Assessment Tool for Shops (HATS)

April 28, 2014

The Hazard Assessment Tool for Shops (HATS) helps campus shops to:

  • Assess hazards and create a written hazard assessment
  • Determine necessary personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Provide training on PPE

Standardized Written Hazard Assessment

HATS takes the guesswork out of identifying hazards in shops to help streamline work processes and avoid injury.

Personal Protective Equipment Guidance

Similar to the Laboratory Hazard Assessment Tool (LHAT), HATS includes a PPE selection guide that conveniently matches specific PPE to specific hazards within shops to minimize hazards.

Training on PPE

The HATS is used as a training tool that supervisors review with employees to identify tasks that require PPE.  Once an employee demonstrates understanding of required PPE, the training is verified by signing the "Verification of PPE Training" form found at the end of the HATS.

Data to Reduce Risk and Injuries

HATS are anticipated to provide useful data to mitigate common shop safety hazards.
