New Medical Waste Bag Requirements 2015

As of 2015, all outer red biohazard bags in a vendor barrel for transport must not only bear the biohazard symbol an the word "Biohazard", but also be certified and marked by the manufacturer as meeting the following American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards:

ASTM D1922 Tear Resistance

ASTM D1709 Dart Resistance

Note: as of September 28, 2015, Biohazard bags in which you only collect waste in the lab or clinic, which are then placed into another bag compliant with the above standards before placement in the vendor barrel must only be certified (but not marked) by the manufacturer to meet the ASTM D1709 Dart Resistance standard. These inner collection bags must still be red, and bear the biohazard symbol and word "biohazard".
