Training Requirements for the Shipping of Biological Materials
Training for shipping biological materials is required for anyone packaging and/or shipping biological or infectious substances. The training is offered online through third parties and recorded in Worksafe. Prerequisite: Bloodborne Pathogens Training (BIO-BBP-OL).
To comply with U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and International Air Transportation Association (IATA) Dangerous Goods Regulations, training is required prior to packaging and/or shipping the following materials for diagnostic or investigational purposes:
- Infectious substances
- Biological substances including human and animal tissues, cells, fluids
- Genetically modified organisms
- Dry ice
- Liquid nitrogen shippers
- Fixatives in limited and excepted quantities
As of January 2019, EH&S is offering the UCLA community two free shipping of biological materials training modules. The training providers are the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the CITI Program. Depending on the type of biological material you are handling, you will need to complete one or both of the modules.
All learners must complete the EH&S Bloodborne Pathogens Training (BIO-BBP-OL) prior to Shipping Biological Materials. Your shipping training completion record will be held until BIO-BBP-OL completion is confirmed. Access the online BBP training module through Worksafe.
